new camera...any sugestions?

Right now I have a Casio EX-Z77, good camera for snap shooters but not good enough for me. The pictures are grainy, and that's not attractive at all. I want something newer and better quality especially if later on in life I want to persue photography as a career path. I had the Nikon Coolpix L12 and I loved it. I have a budget of course and don't want to spend over 250, I would prefer an 8mp and up camera so I can resize and such for prints and whatever else. I need fairly good zoom quality and also good the camera needs to be able to take pictures in low light and still come out good and not red or blurry. I take a lot of macro images so the camera needs to focus well in close ranges as well as far. I don't exactly want to get an SLR so just compacts for me and also it must be SD compatible, I don't want to have to switch over to a memory stick. So any one out there with experiance in handling many digital cameras have any sugestions for a high quality budget price digital camera?
